Description
Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic is a classic Southern-style dish combining crispy bacon, caramelized onions, tender cabbage, and flavorful seasonings. It’s a versatile dish that works well as a side or even a main course. The rich flavors of bacon drippings, garlic, and spices infuse the cabbage, making it a deliciously hearty and satisfying recipe.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large head cabbage, cored and sliced
- 1 tablespoon salt (or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ⅛ teaspoon paprika
Instructions
- Cook the Bacon: In a large stockpot, cook chopped bacon over medium-high heat until crispy (about 10 minutes). Remove bacon and set aside, leaving drippings in the pot.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add diced onions and minced garlic to the bacon drippings. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions are caramelized.
- Add Cabbage: Stir in the sliced cabbage and cook for another 10 minutes until softened.
- Season and Simmer: Add salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Lower heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender.
- Finish and Serve: Stir in the cooked bacon, taste, and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot.
Notes
- To keep the cabbage moist, cover the pot with aluminum foil during the simmering process.
- For a smokier flavor, increase the paprika or add a dash of smoked paprika.
- This recipe can be made vegetarian by substituting the bacon with olive oil or butter and adding smoked paprika.
