This Gooey Butter Cake is a classic dessert from St. Louis featuring a buttery cake layer topped with a rich, gooey cream cheese topping. It’s a simple, indulgent dessert that’s perfect for any occasion and incredibly easy to make with basic ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
Cake Layer Ingredients:
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
Cream Cheese Topping Ingredients:
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  • In a bowl, mix yellow cake mix, melted butter, and 1 egg until a dough forms. Press into the prepared pan.
  • In another bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Mix in melted butter.
