Description

This Homemade Italian Stromboli is a delicious rolled sandwich filled with savory meats, gooey cheese, and bold Italian flavors. Perfect for a family dinner, party appetizer, or anytime you crave something hearty and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough (optional):

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced salami
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced pepperoni
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced ham
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Optional: Sliced bell peppers, olives, or sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor

Instructions

  • Prepare the dough:
    • If making dough from scratch, combine warm water and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Mix in flour, salt, and olive oil, kneading until smooth. Let the dough rise for 1 hour.
    • Alternatively, use store-bought pizza dough.
  • Preheat oven:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the dough:
    • Roll out the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick. Spread marinara sauce over the surface, leaving a 1-inch border.
  • Layer the filling:
    • Evenly layer salami, pepperoni, ham, and mozzarella over the dough. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning on top. Add optional veggies, if desired.
  • Roll and seal:
    • Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seams and ends to seal.
  • Brush and bake:
    • Place the Stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg for a golden crust.
    • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Slice and serve:
    • Let the Stromboli cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing into pieces. Serve with extra marinara sauce for dipping!

Notes

  • Customize the filling with your favorite Italian meats, cheeses, and veggies.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.
  • Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick!
